XTERRA World Spots

ITU World Cross Triathlon Championship Spots

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park

Thunder Bay, ON

It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 running of XTERRA Sleeping Giant.

While we know this has been expected by many since the progression of the pandemic, we still can’t believe we are making this call.

We have been in contact with all who have registered for the 2020 event and refunds will be processed over the next week with the help from our registration partner Active.

Thank-you to all who have been supporting our event for the past 7 years, for sending words of support, and we hope to be back bigger and better in the very near future.

Stay healthy and safe our friends.

Race Overview

Race Overview

Event date: August 22nd, 2020.

Location: The Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada.

Address: Approximately 75min from Thunder Bay (85km): From Thunder Bay head East on Hwy 17, turn right on Hwy 587 until you come to the Sleeping Giant Camp Ground.  You’ve arrived!

XTERRA Sleeping Giant is worth the journey!

The swim will be in the clean and clear spring fed Marie Louise Lake.  From there you enter into the contrast between the beauty and the beast.  Beauty belongs to the undulating, predominately single grassy mountain bike trail.  Intended to be a fast ride, it will provide ample opportunity for passing.  Beast, however, belongs to the more technical yet beautiful trail run.  Running through forest canopies, over creeks and providing views of Lake Superior, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.  This course has everything you would come to expect when racing an XTERRA event in Ontario’s remote wilderness.

How to Qualify for the XTERRA World Championships

AGE GROUPERS

XTERRA Sleeping Giant has been awarded 10 direct entry spots for age groupers into the XTERRA World Championships held on

October 31st 2019 in Maui Hawaii.

  • Those spots will be divided evenly with 5 going to female racers and 5 going to male racers
  • Within the genders, they will be awarded in the following groupings: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+
  • However you will be racing in your corresponding 5 year age group at the XTERRA worlds.
  • You must accept your spot at the event awards ceremony in person otherwise it will be rolled down as per the below.
  • There is a roll down but for 2019 XTERRA is restricting it to 3 deep only. If a finisher does not wish to accept the entry, it will then be rolled down to the next fastest finisher within that gender (only 3 deep for 2019).
  • If you accept a Championship Spots you will have no longer than 2 week post event to validate your entry online before that spot is voided.  It does not roll down after the initial acceptance at the event awards ceremony.

PROS

In NON-OLYMPIC years it will be mandatory for professional athletes wishing to race at the XTERRA World Championship to compete in at least one XTERRA event during the course of the season.

“The spirit of the rule is to honor the core collection of elite athletes that race with us year-round and support our growing number of XTERRA World Tour Championship events,” said XTERRA managing director Dave Nicholas.  “From February through September we offer 29 major races in 22 countries around the world – including 13 in Europe and five in the U.S.  We feel this provides ample opportunity for professionals serious about racing in Maui to compete in at least one qualifying race. We need to honor the commitment and loyalty of the pros that are with us during the year.”

There are four notable exceptions to the rule, which are granted to a) former world champions, b) XTERRA World Tour race champions from previous year, c) sponsor exemptions, and d) extenuating circumstances due to injury.

a) Former XTERRA World Champions are always welcome

b) All World Tour Championship race winners from the previous season will automatically qualify to enter the XTERRA World Championship the following year.

c) The Title Sponsor of the XTERRA World Championship is allowed two racer selections per year.  Presenting Sponsors are allowed one racer selection per year.  The decision as to who receives the sponsor exemptions is made by the managing director in conjunction with each sponsor.

d) The managing director is able to use their best judgment on a case-by-case basis in determining severity of injuries that kept an athlete from competing in a qualified race.

The “must race in one” rule will not be in effect in 2016 and future Olympic years with the understanding triathletes racing for a spot on their national team are confined to a strict schedule.

Athletes interested in receiving a sponsor exemption or wish to explain non-compliance due to injury should email XTERRA at pro@xterraplanet.com.

Mine over matter was designed to take place in a wilderness type setting. Our main location is situated in what used to be the Kelso Quarry. Director's Notes

A note from Gordon (owner of XTERRA Sleeping Giant)

After five long years of begging, pleading and applying, I would like to introduce the “New” XTERRA Sleeping Giant 2014.  It takes place at the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, known for its rough and rugged terrain and a giant rock peninsula, which at the right angle depicts a sleeping giant.

This will not be your typical (grandmas) triathlon implying weedy dark lakes, busy paved highways and bone jarring asphalt run courses. XTERRA Sleeping Giant consists of pristine clear water, a grassy, predominantly single-track bike course, followed by a trail run set beneath a forest canopy.  This course defines true off-road triathlon, it’s the natural human playground.

If it’s your first XTERRA, you will be so busy with the view, you will forget it’s a race.  If you are a seasoned off road triathlete, the long course will be sure to challenge you.

There is a distance category for everyone, including just a trial run, if that’s your passion.  I invite you to stay after the race whether you bring a tent or a trailer there will be a spot for you.  Enjoy 50 miles of hiking/biking trails and make sure you climb the 1300 ft ascent to the top of the massive Sleeping Giant peninsula.  Also enjoy the old mining town of Silver islet right on the shores of Lake Superior.  Its now mostly converted cottages but the history is still deeply engrained.

We look forward to seeing you, whether your from Thunder Bay or some where in north America, and I promise you an exciting and safe race that will keep you coming back for years to come.
